10 mistakes to avoid when creating your website

Clear preparation avoids some late corrections. Here are ten points to review before the build, and then to check on the website itself.

Define the main action you expect: submitting a request, viewing an offer or buying. This objective helps you choose the pages and features you need.

2. Choosing the tools before the needs

A CMS or a plugin is no substitute for proper scoping. Start from uses, content and constraints to select a suitable solution.

3. Leaving the content until the end

Copy, photos and product information influence the structure. Identify early on what exists, what is missing and who is responsible for each piece of content.

4. Presenting an offer that is too vague

Say what you offer, for whom and within what scope. General statements about quality or innovation do not answer the visitor’s questions.

5. Forgetting the addresses of an existing website

During a redesign, list the useful URLs before changing them. Keep them wherever possible and prepare the necessary redirects to equivalent content.

6. Only checking on a desktop computer

Test navigation, copy, buttons and forms on mobile and tablet. Content that is present can still be hard to read or use.

7. Adding visuals that are too heavy or unnecessary

Choose images that explain your business, then adjust their format and dimensions. Do not use a large image simply to fill a space.

8. Making it hard to get in touch

Contact details and the next step must be easy to find. Only ask for the information you need in the form and check that it works.

9. Assuming that going live is enough for SEO

Search engine optimisation requires relevant content, an accessible structure and ongoing monitoring. No plugin and no launch can guarantee visits or clients.

10. Forgetting maintenance and access

Specify the responsibilities after delivery: access, updates, backups and future changes. Make sure you know who to contact when a problem arises.
