Why choose WordPress for your website?

WordPress can suit a brochure website, a media site or a shop, but its name alone does not guarantee the quality of a project. The choice depends on the content to be managed, the features expected and how the website will be looked after.

WordPress lets you manage pages, posts and media. Drafts, revisions and user roles help organise publishing. These capabilities are described in the official WordPress features.

For your project, check above all the tasks you will be able to carry out after delivery: editing a piece of text, replacing an image, publishing a news item. A demonstration using your own content is more useful than a general promise of simplicity.

An adaptable foundation, with choices to keep under control

Themes organise the presentation and plugins add features. The website can be customised as needed, but each component must have a clear purpose. Piling up plugins can complicate maintenance and compatibility. It is better to define the useful features and check how they will be implemented before adding yet another tool.

Free does not mean no budget

The WordPress software is open source and its core can be used without licence fees. Hosting, the domain, design work and some plugins or services are still items to budget for. See the items that make up a website budget to distinguish between building and running costs.

SEO and performance take work

A WordPress website can be well structured for search engines and pleasant to use. This depends in particular on the content, the theme, the images and the settings. Installing an SEO plugin does not guarantee any ranking.

You also need to plan for updates, restorable backups and checks suited to the website’s key features.

Questions to ask before you decide

Who will hold the access and the domain? Which paid components will be needed? Who will look after the site? What data will you be able to recover if you change provider? These answers let you compare WordPress with other solutions based on your own context, rather than simply choosing a well-known tool.
